Equal Shares and the Idea of a Social Contract - David Schmidtz

Does justice require equal shares? Prof. David Schmidtz leads students on an exploration of equal shares and social contract theory. Philosophers have long sought to specify principles of justice by asking what we would agree to if we came to a bargaining table to negotiate the outlines of a society in which we subsequently would live. There is a strong moral intuition that people have for equal shares in these types of thought experiments. But what happens when we make the thought experiment a bit more complex, and more similar to the world we actually live in? How can we begin to approach such complicated questions and begin to arrive at answers? This video is part of a series about basic philosophical questions on the subject of equality, and is also part of a larger series on foundational topics in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). Videos in the series feature six professors who teach in university PPE programs.
