It lies near the coastal town of Ekenäs, in the historic Raseborg area, a region known for its rich history, beautiful scenery, and cultural attractions. What makes Västerby special is the contrast between its surroundings and the experience on the track itself. While the nearby towns are full of life, the track feels wonderfully isolated, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature and focus entirely on your training. As soon as we clipped into our roller skis and pushed off in the stadium area, one thing immediately stood out: the asphalt quality. It was unbelievably smooth🧈. In fact, it almost felt soft, as if it were deforming slightly under the rollers. It was the closest we’ve ever come to the sensation of skiing on snow while on roller skis. As we continued around the track, we quickly noticed another standout feature: the terrain. The course is always going either uphill or downhill, never flattening out for long enough to break the rhythm. That continuous flow of climbs and descents gives the track a distinctly cross-country skiing feel. And once you know that a fast descent 🌊is waiting just around the corner, attacking the climbs becomes surprisingly addictive. Once the first steep climb is behind us, the track presents us with a choice. We can continue straight ahead and enjoy a quick descent, or turn left and head onto a section of fast, rolling terrain. Actually, there is a third option, too. Right here, you’ll find a barbecue shelter, making it the perfect spot to take a break and grill a few sausages before continuing your workout. Now let’s enjoy this buttery-smooth descent. A roller at the bottom gives us one last burst of acceleration before we begin the longest climb on the course. The gradient increases gradually all the way to the top, making it an excellent place to gauge your progress in double poling or V2 skating over time. From there, we move toward the most technical section of the track: a sweeping off-camber corner. If that’s not your cup of tea, there’s no shame in turning around at the intersection. But if you decide to continue, you’ll be rewarded with a thrilling descent that will put your steering skills to the test. This final descent brings us back to the stadium. If we had brought a proper biathlon rifle with us, we might have tried hitting a few targets. But the harsh reality is that we’d probably end up skiing five penalty loops anyway, so that’s what we did instead. ============ Västerby on Suomen eteläisin rullahiihtorata ja yksi Uudenmaan piilotetuista helmistä. Heti kun kiinnitimme monot siteisiin ja työnsimme itsemme liikkeelle stadionalueelta, yksi asia pisti välittömästi silmään: asfaltin laatu. Se oli uskomattoman sileä. Itse asiassa se tuntui lähes pehmeältä, aivan kuin se olisi joustanut hieman rullien alla. Se oli lähimpänä lumella hiihtämisen tunnetta, jonka olemme koskaan kokeneet rullasuksilla. Kun jatkoimme kierrosta, huomasimme nopeasti radan toisenkin vahvuuden: maaston. Reitti kulkee lähes tauotta joko ylämäkeen tai alamäkeen, eikä tasaisia osuuksia juuri ole katkaisemassa rytmiä. Jatkuva nousujen ja laskujen vuorottelu tekee radasta hyvin maastohiihtomaisen. Ja kun tietää, että seuraavan nousun jälkeen odottaa vauhdikas lasku, ylämäkiin hyökkäämisestä tulee yllättävän koukuttavaa. Ensimmäisen jyrkän nousun jälkeen rata tarjoaa meille valinnan. Voimme jatkaa suoraan ja nauttia nopeasta laskusta tai kääntyä vasemmalle vauhdikkaalle kumpuilevalle osuudelle. Itse asiassa vaihtoehtoja on vielä kolmaskin. Täältä löytyy laavu grillipaikkoineen, joten tämä on täydellinen paikka pitää tauko ja paistaa muutama makkara ennen harjoituksen jatkamista. Nautitaanpa nyt tästä silkinsileästä laskusta. Laskun alhaalla oleva kumpu antaa meille vielä viimeisen lisävauhdin ennen kuin aloitamme radan pisimmän nousun. Nousu jyrkkenee vähitellen aina huipulle asti, joten se on erinomainen paikka seurata omaa kehitystä tasatyönnössä tai V2-luistelussa.
