Waste materials are transformed from their original shapes into different forms through processing. We reveal the process of how waste becomes a resource in a work site fraught with dangers such as foul odors and noise. ■ Waste Tires and Glass Bottles Transformed into Asphalt Aggregate Waste tires and glass bottles are reborn as asphalt aggregate through reprocessing. Workers move approximately 400 waste tires a day—weighing a whopping 50kg each—to separate the rubber and iron inside. A workshop filled entirely with black dust. Many steel cores are hidden inside waste tires, amounting to a staggering 4 to 5 tons per day. Waste tires undergo a total of five stages to be processed into fine powder. Another recyclable material is glass bottles! As glass bottles pass along the long conveyor belt, the workers' hands move quickly. Various paper cartons are discarded in daily life! The amount of paper cartons generated in Korea annually is 70,000 tons! Of this, two-thirds are not recycled. It is said that properly collecting and recycling discarded paper cartons can recover an annual economic cost of 10.5 billion won! Where exactly do these discarded milk cartons go? We followed the process of how milk cartons turn into toilet paper. The task of sorting milk cartons is more difficult than expected. The sacks, which should only contain milk cartons, are mixed with all kinds of unimaginable waste, ranging from diapers to shoes. In the summer, the stench is so severe that work cannot even proceed. The sorted milk cartons are compressed and sent to paper companies to be produced into various types of toilet paper, ranging from roll toilet paper to jumbo toilet paper. Carrying, moving, and packaging the recycled materials to produce toilet paper is a labor-intensive process. We explore the journey of how discarded paper cartons are transformed back into clean toilet paper. ■ The True Identity of Volume-Based Waste Bags! Recycling of Waste Vinyl Volume-based waste bags are made using waste vinyl pouring out of factories. The collection site is chaotic, and the work is arduous and time-consuming as the vinyl is manually separated one by one according to color and elasticity. After collection, the waste vinyl is processed into pellet-shaped raw materials so that it can be reprocessed.
