Here’s a clear explanation: 🔧 Purpose of Trip Timing Test To ensure that: The protective device (breaker or relay) trips the motor circuit within the specified time for a given overcurrent condition. Protection operates correctly to prevent motor damage and maintain system coordination. ⚙️ Types of Devices Tested Thermal overload relay (used in DOL/Star-Delta starters) MCCB/ACB (Molded Case / Air Circuit Breaker) Protective relay (in medium/high-voltage motor feeders) 🧪 Test Methods 1. Primary Injection Test The actual test current (a multiple of rated current, e.g., 3×, 5×, 10×) is injected through the circuit breaker. The trip time is measured from the application of current to the instant the breaker trips. Used for thermal-magnetic and electromagnetic breakers. Equipment used: Primary current injection test set Timer (automatic in modern test sets) Result example: Test Current (×In) Measured Trip Time (s) Rated Trip Time (s) Status 3× 7.2 6–8 Pass 5× 1.9 1.5–2.5 Pass 2. Secondary Injection Test Used mainly for electronic or microprocessor-based relays. Simulated current/voltage signals are injected at the relay’s input terminals. Measures how long the relay takes to issue a trip signal. 3. Overload Relay Test (for LV motors) Current is injected through the overload relay. Trip time is recorded for a set multiple of full-load current (usually 1.2× to 7.2× In).
