WDR television presenter Dieter Könnes rides the Ahr cycle path within three days and wants to know what it looks like three months after the flood. On day 1 of his tour, he goes from Blankenheim to Ahrhütte and from there via Müsch to Antweiler. How bad is the destruction in the flood area and is the Ahr cycle path still passable? What have the affected people experienced in the past weeks and months? And are tourists even welcome? A very emotional journey awaits him. The cycle path - from the source in Blankenheim in the Eifel to the confluence with the Rhine near Sinzig - is a beautiful 90-kilometer route, depending on the route chosen. For experienced cyclists it would have been a daily program in the past. Then the flood came and left on the 14./15. July 2021 a path of destruction. The Ahr Valley is one of the most beautiful travel destinations in Germany. A breathtaking landscape, the vineyards, many small villages with partly historical backdrops. In addition to the Ahr valley cycle path, the region is also known and popular with hikers. The Ahrsteig, for example, a 108-kilometer long-distance or red wine hiking trail, is one of the most popular hiking trails in Germany. “I would like to get an idea of ​​the situation in the Ahr valley. I want to know how people are doing and, above all, how things are going in the Ahr Valley, ”says Könnes, who has been working as a freelance journalist in the Ahr Valley for weeks. The Ahrtal-Radweg 2021 is and will be a special challenge, not least because of the destruction.
