Thanks to an unprecedented international effort, discover an exceptional heritage saved at the cost of a monumental undertaking. Returning from southern Egypt, travelers reported the existence of temples between the Nubian Desert and the Nile. Majestic stone colossi emerging from the sands guarded their entrances and secrets. For centuries, Abu Simbel, Dendur, Amada, and other monuments fell victim to looters, earthquakes, desertification, and floods, ultimately risking being swallowed up by the sea in the 20th century. In 1954, the announcement of a dam construction project threatened all of Nubia and more than 20 ancient sanctuaries. Some temples were hastily dismantled and reinstalled on artificial islands, while others were even shipped abroad to cities like Madrid, Turin, and New York.
