The 2025 excavation campaign of the CNR ISPC (Archaeological Mapping Laboratory) in Ugento, Salento, directed by Giuseppe Scardozzi of the CNR ISPC (supervised by Serena Strafella, a superintendent of the Lecce Superintendency), has revealed approximately 300 sections of the walls, which will be further investigated in the fall, also thanks to geophysical surveys conducted in December 2024 by the Geophysics Laboratory of the CNR-ISPC in Lecce. In particular, the investigation, as reported in the press release, focused on "a large corner section of the fortifications, approximately 100 meters long, which extends between Via S. Francesco and Via Bolzano. This section is characterized by a projecting bastion at the corner, where the ancient structures are preserved up to a maximum height of 1.80 meters. The most recent excavations have also uncovered an additional 70-meter-long section of wall. Especially important are the approximately 450 acorn missiles and darts recovered, testifying to the bloody battle fought along that very section of wall.
