Hi! I'm Oshige, a Japanese mom of two, living in rural Kansai 🌿 Not poor. Not rich. Nothing left to spend — and still, we live well. Today I finally said it out loud: exactly where our family stands in Japan. I drew the whole thing on paper — the pyramid every Japanese person has seen, the five layers, and the one extra line I had to add underneath to fit us in. 👇 About the pyramid in this video Every year, Nomura Research Institute publishes a chart that sorts Japanese households into five layers by "net financial assets" — savings and investments added up, minus debt. That last part matters more than people think. ・Ultra-high-net-worth: ¥500M and above (about $3.2M+) ・High-net-worth: ¥100M – 500M (about $650K – $3.2M) ・Semi-affluent: ¥50M – 100M (about $320K – $650K) ・Upper-mass: ¥30M – 50M (about $200K – $320K) ・Mass: under ¥30M (under $200K) Source: Nomura Research Institute, household financial asset pyramid. (On my paper I wrote them in simpler words, so I could actually read my own handwriting on camera 😅) Most Japanese households sit in that bottom layer. We do too — and once I subtract our mortgage, we sit just below it. That's the honest answer. 👇 The two things in our kitchen Our miso isn't bought. Grandma asked someone she knows to make it and shared it with us, and last year I made a batch myself. It costs us nothing, and it's the best thing in the house. Our soy sauce is the opposite. A local bottle, about ¥1,000 (around $7). We use it morning, noon, and night, 365 days a year. A household with negative net assets, and that's the one thing I won't give up — I know. But if I switched to the cheapest bottle, I'd slowly get grumpy. And that wouldn't be a saving. Small savings aren't wrong.
