With great dedication and energy, Thomas has created a natural garden of exceptional quality. In just a few years, he has created a habitat for a wide variety of animal and plant species. One of his goals was to provide a home for as many native animal species as possible. This was achieved by creating diverse habitats and using countless native plants. What particularly appealed to me about Thomas's concept is the conscious acceptance of change and dynamism, as well as the remarkable naturalness and unpretentiousness of the entire garden. The site presented several challenges: a less than ideal microclimate, and in winter, due to its low elevation, large pools of cold air often form. Many damp to wet areas and heavy, loamy soil. Yet, overall, ideal conditions for a remarkably diverse natural garden. ... Key features of his garden: Meadows that are mowed infrequently, often with initial plantings Many food plants for birds, caterpillars, wild bees, etc. Benjes hedge Plenty of deadwood Native shrubs, many of them heavily thorned, providing refuge for various animal species Fenced areas that are largely left to their own devices e.g., a reed bed Nesting aids for wild bees Nesting boxes for various bird species A spacious, easily visible bird feeder Watering stations, bird and insect baths A small pond as a "home base" for four Indian Runner ducks As a passion project, Thomas has founded a community group in his town. By involving a wide variety of population and interest groups, the aim is to significantly enhance the diversity and ecological quality of the local area. I would like to share more about this.
