DIY camper van insulation | Proven in subfreezing winter

🎓 Equip your science hats! ☃️ Frosty winters in Finland have tested my self build camper van, so I’m happy to share how to insulate a van for snowy arctic living. Just like in winter sports, the secret is to use many layers! Here I explain 6 (six!) different insulation materials in this winter-proof camper van Closed cell elastomeric foam sheet Solvent-free water-based glue Heat-bound polyester fibre (fiber) panel Polyurethane (PIR) foam between aluminium laminate sheets (better than - Expanded (EPS) / Extruded (XPS) Polystyrene board) Spray foam: Flexible PUR (polyurethane) foam (sprayed to van frame) Polypropylene (PP) and butyl rubber insulation tape (thermal break for plywood panels) This video shows which materials I selected and why, what is the theory for effective passive thermal management and where to focus when insulating for subzero winter or boiling hot summer. Yes, a top tier insulation is incredibly comfortable in summer, when you need to park in direct blazing sunlight to recharge your batteries with solar panel energy. Special and unique about this MB Sprinter van insulation are the solvent free, water based adhesive for foam insulation sheet and the polypropylene and butyl rubber insulation tape between sheet metal frames and wood panels. We also applied the flexible spray foam insulation, despite its warnings and limitations to welding. Detailed step by step example on how to insulate a camper during van conversion is here (use the search function for “insulation”): https://badasanaexperiences.wordpress... This video is a bit science heavy although I try to explain basics of thermodynamics, material sciences and technical stuff concisely.
