A lecture as part of the summer educational program for the exhibition "Masterpieces of Painting and Prints of the Edo Period." The lecture will be given by Anna Guseva, PhD, Associate Professor at the School of Historical Sciences at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, and Academic Director of the Master's program "History of Artistic Culture and the Art Market." The art of the Edo period (1615–1868) is extremely diverse and multifaceted. Unlike previous periods, when the main patrons of art were aristocrats (Heian, 794–1185) or educated samurai and monks (Muromachi, 1333–1573), during the Edo period, this role began to be assumed by members of the bourgeoisie, whose tastes ranged from the vulgar to the exquisitely refined. The geography of artistic centers is also expanding significantly: in addition to traditional centers like Kyoto and Nara, where artisans and artists have lived for centuries, new ones are emerging, such as Edo, Osaka, and Nagasaki. And although artists are increasingly choosing to travel, each of these centers is gradually developing its own artistic identity. This overview lecture will discuss old and new artistic centers where artists worked and their clients lived.
