Hi friends, The inner ear is the final part of the ear, allowing us to translate sound waves into recognizable information. The cochlea is a spiral-shaped membrane which is lined with over 15,000 tiny hairs and has fluid moving within it. When a tiny bone taps on the membrane of the cochlea, the fluid inside moves, stimulating the tiny hairs and triggering electrical nerve impulses. The inner ear has 3 main parts: 1.Cochlea - The cochlea is the auditory area of the inner ear that changes sound waves into nerve signals. 2.Semicircular canals - The semicircular canals sense balance and posture to assist in equilibrium. 3. Vestibule- This is the area of the inner ear cavity that lies between the cochlea and semicircular canals, also assisting in equilibrium. So what happens when a sound comes to your ears? these following things happen - 1. The outer ear (the part that you can see) acts like a funnel that sends sounds into your ear canal 2.The sound waves travel down the ear canal to your eardrum in the middle ear. 3.Sound waves make your eardrum vibrate and move the 3 tiny bones in your middle ear. 4.The movement from the middle ear leads to pressure waves that make the fluid inside the cochlea move. 5.The movement of fluid in your inner ear makes the tiny hairs in the cochlea bend and move. 6.The “dancing” hairs in the cochlea convert the movement from sound waves into electrical signals. 7.The electrical signals are sent to the brain through the hearing (auditory) nerves.
