In practice, a stop is a way for investors to minimize losses and maximize gains. A stop loss is a "barrier" you create to exit a trade as soon as it reaches a certain value – so you don't lose money. A stop gain, on the other hand, is created so you can exit the trade and guarantee your return. When buying and selling stocks, you need to use a brokerage's online trading platform, and it's at this point that you can select stop options.
