Nagpur Spicy Curry Food Tour l Tari Poha, Sambhar Samosa, Patodi Kadhi, Buttery Dal, Gila Kalakand

The street food of Nagpur is both vibrant and fascinating and in today's episode we are joining two leading food bloggers from the city, Sumedh Kanade from Gourmet Musafir and Abhinav Jeswani for an exciting food tour. Let's walk you through the experience. The first stop was Cafe John Restaurant. Don't let the name confuse you whether it is a cafe or a restaurant. This simple looking old eatery is a place for chai and Indian snacks. We went there to try a unique fusion dish called samosa sambar. We never thought that this combo would work until we tried a morsel. Mildly spiced samosa dunked in tangy and sambar was a revelation in terms of new flavour range. No wonder the locals love it, especially the youth. The second destination was Ganesh Farsan. The word 'farsan' refers to snacks. This place is one of the go places for snacks and sweets. There were so many things on the menu but our prime intention was to savour the rava ka pakoda and gila kalakand gulab jamun. The former was a hearty fritter made of semolina, gram flour, spinach, whole spices etc. that is crisp on the outside and soft inside. The latter was a luscious combo of semi liquid kalakand and a soft gulab jamun. The third stop of this tour was the Damru Kadhi Patodi stall outside the District Court. Damru is the name of the current owner whose father started this eatery as a small setup. Today it is one of the popular stalls in the locality where people come from far and near, many of them just for the patodi, a fried pastry stuffed with lentil and gram flour based mixture. Here in Nagpur it is served with buttermilk kadhi and chutney. We enjoyed the interplay of spicy, savoury and tangy and sweet flavours and the fact that the owner takes great pride in his dish. The fourth stop was Ramji Shyamji Poha wale which is an institution in itself when it comes to tari poha. The place was quite big and bustling with people from all age groups. Mildly spiced poha served with spicy kala chana curry makes for a hearty and filling meal. This combination is so well perfected by brothers Ramji and Shyamji that it definitely is a must try food item in Nagpur. A conversation with the genial Ramji gave us a fair idea about the place and its operations. He also showed us how the simple yet delicious poha is made. The richness of the curry effortlessly complimented the poha and just like everyone else we too enjoyed it. The last stop was Param Da Dhaba renowned for their insanely buttery chana dal. The huge crowd was a testimony of its wide reputation. Our hosts too are a fan of this dal. Just like most of the locals we got our order delivered in the car. The slow cooked dal had attained a smooth and creamy texture. The generous use of butter could be felt in every morsel. Ovelall it was a pretty good dal which they have been serving since very long. Watch till the end to enjoy all the drooling details.
