In the headlines... Iran and the US trade strikes after Iran attacks a ship in Hormuz. Though largely symbolic, with no injuries reported, it illustrates the impossibility of coming to any substantial agreement between the two countries. Indeed, as we have reported, almost everything the countries signed in the vague MoU is disputed. It could not be otherwise. At the same time, Israel and Lebanon have signed an agreement, presumably, to get rid of Hezbollah...We’ll have to wait and see how that works out... Trump accuses Iran of ‘foolish’ ceasefire violation by firing on ships in Hormuz (Times of Israel) US strikes Iran after Strait of Hormuz cargo ship attack as ceasefire tensions escalate (Fox News) Bahrain condemns Iranian drone attack as Washington, Tehran trade strikes (Iran International) Israel-Lebanon Deal Is a Blow to Iran — If Hezbollah Is Actually Disarmed (JFEED, N12) The initial problem is that Iran insists on controlling the passage of every ship that goes through the strait while threatening any ship that defies its orders. Their actions shows that there is no mutual understanding to what the MoU means. Attempts to try to find common ground will always be futile ... yet the fiasco continues... Headline 1 Trump accuses Iran of ‘foolish’ ceasefire violation by firing on ships in Hormuz (Times of Israel) US President Donald Trump on Friday accused Iran of violating the ceasefire memorandum of understanding that the sides signed last week, saying Tehran shot at least four “attack drones” at ships in the Strait of Hormuz. ... “Obviously, this is a foolish violation of our ceasefire agreement,” Trump said, without specifying whether there would be any consequences. Well, the US did do something... Headline 2 US strikes Iran after Strait of Hormuz cargo ship attack as ceasefire tensions escalate (Fox News) U.S. forces launched strikes against Iranian targets Friday after Tehran attacked a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. The retaliation comes as Washington, Tehran, Israel and Lebanon navigate a fragile ceasefire framework. A few missile sites and radar sites were hit but nothing really of substance... Iran, of course, felt the need to answer back... and so it hit Bahrain... Headline 3 Bahrain condemns Iranian drone attack as Washington, Tehran trade strikes (Iran International) Bahrain condemned an Iranian drone attack on its territory, accusing Tehran of breaching the US-Iran memorandum of understanding and reserving the right to defend its sovereignty. And so goes the back and forth... Headline 4 Israel-Lebanon Deal Is a Blow to Iran — If Hezbollah Is Actually Disarmed (JFEED, N12) The Washington framework is important because it separates Lebanon from Iran, conditions Israeli withdrawal on Hezbollah’s disarmament, and reasserts Lebanese sovereignty. But after the failures of the 1983 Lebanon agreement and U.N. Resolution 1701, the region has learned to judge such deals by what happens on the ground — not by the signing ceremony. The full details of the new Israel-Lebanon framework agreement have not yet been published. The timetable remains unclear, the exact scope of the pilot zones has not been finalized publicly, and it is still uncertain how quickly the Lebanese army will be able, or willing, to replace Israeli forces in areas currently held by the IDF. But the importance of the agreement lies less in the operational details and more in the principles it establishes. The first principle is mutual recognition of sovereignty. Lebanon and Israel are not yet making peace, and this is not normalization. But when both states formally acknowledge each other’s sovereignty, they are also saying something important: the border is not supposed to be controlled by militias, proxies, or foreign powers. That matters most of all for Hezbollah. If Lebanon is sovereign, then Hezbollah has no legitimate authority to drag the country into war, invade Israeli territory, fire rockets at Israeli civilians, or maintain an independent military force outside the authority of the Lebanese state. The agreement therefore strikes directly at Hezbollah’s central claim: that it alone is the “protector” of Lebanon. We’ll see how this all works out. What it does do, is refuting the lies of Iran with respect to Israel’s actions in Lebanon. Lebanon is not the problem, Hezbollah is, for both countries! As far as Iran accepting this as fulfilling the MoU is unlikely. They always seem to find a way to deny reality...
