Istanbul's BRT system, known as Metrobüs, is one of the city's most important bus corridors. It was created to alleviate chaotic traffic and offer a quick way to get around in a metropolis with over 15 million inhabitants. The main feature is that buses run in dedicated lanes in the median of expressways, avoiding congestion. The route crosses the European side and reaches the Asian side via the Bosphorus Bridge, making it the only public transportation system on wheels that crosses both continents. Metrobüs opened in 2007 and has since undergone several expansions, reaching over 40 kilometers in length and dozens of stations. It operates with high-capacity articulated and bi-articulated buses, capable of carrying hundreds of passengers per trip. During peak hours, frequency is very high, with intervals of less than a minute between buses, making it one of the busiest BRT systems in the world. It's estimated that over 700,000 people use the system daily. Despite its speed, the Metrobus faces challenges, particularly overcrowding during peak hours. Even so, it remains essential for Istanbul's mobility, connecting peripheral areas to central areas and integrating with the metro, light rail, and city buses. For visitors to the city, the BRT may not be as comfortable as other options, but it's a clear example of how a relatively simple solution has transformed travel in one of the busiest cities in the world.
