Join Levi’s® Historian Tracey Panek in the Archives to learn about the S.S. Central America, a ship that sank off the coast of North Carolina in 1857 carrying 30,000 pounds (13,600 kg) of gold. In December 2022, artifacts recovered from the Central America went on auction. Go behind the scenes at the auction to learn the history of the “Ship of Gold” and whether a pair of button-fly pants that sold for $114,000, were early Levi’s® jeans.
