Warner Oland in "Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo" (1937) - ft. Keye Luke, Harold Huber & Sidney Blackmer
Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) arrives in Monte Carlo with his enthusiastic son Lee Chan (Keye Luke), expecting a restful trip. However, his friend Police Commissioner Jules Etienne Joubert (Harold Huber) asks for discreet assistance. Wealthy financier Victor Karnoff (Sidney Blackmer) is visiting the city with valuable bearer bonds rumored to be tied to international financial intrigue. Charlie reluctantly agrees to observe matters. Karnoff is seen at the luxury casino among elegant travelers and gamblers, including Evelyn Gray (Mary Brian) and Joan Karnoff (Virginia Field). Also present is Al Rogers (Walter Byron), a gambler with heavy losses. Karnoff leaves the casino and is shot in his car just outside. The bonds disappear, confirming the crime was planned. Joubert urges Charlie to take the case quietly to avoid scandal. Charlie begins questioning those who surrounded Karnoff, while Lee eagerly tries to help, sometimes creating more confusion than progress. Evelyn behaves as though she fears exposure of something in her past. Joan reveals that Karnoff was a mentor and protector whose dealings were not always transparent. Rogers appears entangled in debts but denies involvement beyond gambling. Another figure of interest is Anton (George Lynn), a taxi driver who was near the scene and reacts jumpily when pressed. Charlie discovers a ledger containing coded entries. Interpreting it, he sees Karnoff was linked to a smuggling operation involving fraudulent securities moving through Monte Carlo’s casino network. Karnoff had decided to break with his accomplices and reveal the scheme, making his murder a silencing measure rather than a robbery alone. The investigation tightens. Anton attempts to flee. Charlie stops him and, through calm reasoning, gets him to reveal he was ordered to kill Karnoff. But Anton was only the triggerman. The true architect is Commissaire Marquand (Edward Raquello), Joubert’s trusted associate, who hoped to take over the operation once Karnoff was eliminated. When confronted, Marquand betrays himself by trying to escape and is arrested by Joubert’s men. With the conspiracy exposed and the bonds recovered, Joubert expresses gratitude but sorrow over betrayal within his own ranks. Lee proudly believes he has helped solve the case, while Charlie notes progress often comes with mistakes. Their vacation spoiled but duty fulfilled, father and son leave Monte Carlo behind, its glamorous lights now dimmed by the human greed they uncovered. This was the sixteenth and final Charlie Chan film with Oland portraying Chan.Warner Oland contracted bronchial pneumonia during his visit to Sweden and died there on August 6, 1938, at age 57. The series continued at Fox for another eleven entries with Sidney Toler. In 1942 Fox sold it to Monogram Pictures, and it continued on even after Toler's death in 1947 with Roland Winters in the role through six films into 1949. Keye Luke would also reprise his role as Lee Chan from the film in" Mr. Moto's Gamble" (1938), a film originally produced to be a Charlie Chan film prior to Oland's death. Lee Chan (Keye Luke) stated he was in Monte Carlo to show a painting. Luke was an accomplished artist in real life, specializing in murals. Harold Huber spoke French fluently, which he puts to good effect as the Chief of Police, Jules Joubert. Charlie Chan quotes: "In future remember tongue often hang man quicker than rope." "Questions are key to door of truth." "Illustrious ancestor once say, 'Destination never reached by turning back on same.'" "Fortunately assassination of French language not serious crime." "If paintings as full of imagination as detective work, he will be Chinese Rembrandt." "Humble presence is of no more consequence than one drop of rain in cloudburst." "Can assist in negotiating one order of waffles without danger of arrest?" Stylishly directed by Eugene Forde, who went on to direct Oland's successor, Sidney Toler. A great sendoff to an unforgettable actor. Automobiles of the era play a big part in the film, the star vehicle being the gorgeous Rolls convertible. A complex little mystery with some fine twists, and a competent part of a series of enjoyable detective films. Worth watching for fans of the series.
