THE INTERNAL MIDFIELDER (or MEZZANINE) The midfielder position is one of the most complete of the eleven players, with both defensive and offensive qualities, as demonstrated by Zielinski and Barella. When the ball is low on the pitch, the midfielder must provide passing lanes for his teammates, and if the ball rises towards the midfield line, Zielinski must coordinate his movements with the flanks. In the crossing area, the player can move into the penalty area or remain on the edge of the box for a long shot. If the play develops on the opposite side, the mezzala positions himself in the attacking midfield, moving between the defense and the opposition midfield line. Barella and Zielinski have consistently established themselves over the last three seasons, scoring around five goals and assists per season, demonstrating good attacking qualities, essential for understanding how to play dynamically as a midfielder. In defense, the midfielder can apply high pressure to the opposing center back or full back, but when the opposition pushes forward, he must return to the ball and help his team. If they reach the cross, Zielinski and Barella remain slightly detached from the defenders, focusing on their movements and runs.
