The focus is not on the festival as a spectacle, but on Carnival as a concentrated portrait of social segregation, the privatization of the street, and the exploitation of labor. You will see how public space is transformed into a commodity during Carnival, with examples from Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. The video explains how VIP boxes, roped-off areas, the general admission area, and the barriers work, and how these structures organize who can circulate, who can stay, and who is pushed to the margins of the festivities. I also talk about who materially sustains Carnival: the security guards and recyclable material collectors. The video shows how these workers become part of the festival's infrastructure, with poorly paid work, high physical risk, and little recognition, while most of the profit goes to the VIP boxes, parade groups, and large sponsors. Another important part of the video deals with security and surveillance. You will understand how the police, fenced-off areas, and the use of facial recognition change the way people move around the city during Carnival and create different levels of protection and repression for different groups of the population. Finally, the video analyzes the environmental cost of mass Carnival. I talk about energy consumption, the use of diesel generators, waste production, recycling done by waste pickers, and the limitations of "sustainability" actions based on marketing and carbon offsetting. This video is for anyone who wants to understand Carnival as an urban, economic, social, and environmental phenomenon, and not just as entertainment. It shows how the festival reveals the city that already exists: segregated, unequal, and organized by money.
