Belief in Allah’s Will (Al-Qadr - Divine Decree) Belief in Allah’s Will (Qadr) is one of the six pillars of Iman (faith) in Islam. It means believing that everything happens by Allah’s knowledge, will, and wisdom—whether good or bad. 1. Quranic Evidence for Allah’s Will Allah says: "Indeed, We have created everything according to a decree." (Surah Al-Qamar 54:49) "No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being – indeed that, for Allah, is easy." (Surah Al-Hadid 57:22) "And you do not will except that Allah wills – Lord of the worlds." (Surah At-Takwir 81:29) These verses show that nothing happens without Allah’s will and everything is part of His divine plan. 2. Hadith on Believing in Qadr The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "Faith is to believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in the Divine Decree (Qadr), both the good and the bad of it." (Sahih Muslim 8) This means a Muslim must accept both good and bad events as part of Allah’s wisdom and knowledge. 3. Understanding Allah’s Will (Qadr) in Four Levels Scholars explain that belief in Qadr has four key aspects: 1. Allah’s Knowledge (Al-Ilm) – Allah knows everything that will happen, past, present, and future. 2. Allah’s Writing (Al-Kitabah) – Everything is written in the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz). 3. Allah’s Will (Al-Mashi’ah) – Nothing happens without Allah’s permission and decree. 4. Allah’s Creation (Al-Khalq) – Allah is the Creator of everything, including our actions. 4. How to Apply Belief in Allah’s Will in Life a) Accepting Life’s Challenges If something good happens, be grateful because Allah willed it. If something bad happens, be patient and trust Allah’s wisdom. Know that everything happens for a reason, even if we don’t understand it immediately. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "How amazing is the affair of a believer! Everything that happens to him is good for him. If something good comes to him, he thanks Allah, and that is good for him. If something bad happens, he is patient, and that is also good for him." (Sahih Muslim 2999) b) Making Effort While Trusting Allah Believing in Allah’s Will does not mean we stop making efforts. We must: Work hard while relying on Allah. Make Dua and seek Allah’s help. Accept results whether they go in our favor or not. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Tie your camel and trust in Allah." (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2517) This means we should take precautions but ultimately trust in Allah’s plan. c) Overcoming Regret & Worry If we fail or lose something, we should not keep regretting. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "If something happens to you, do not say: 'If only I had done such and such,' but say: 'It was Allah’s decree, and He does what He wills.'" (Sahih Muslim 2664) 5. Dua for Strength in Allah’s Decree The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us to say: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ رِضَا بَعْدَ الْقَضَاءِ "Allahumma inni as'aluka ridaa ba'dal-qadaa." (O Allah, I ask You for contentment after Your decree.) (Ahmad 3498) This helps us accept whatever happens with peace in our hearts.
