Obiective in TETEBATU: oameni, jungla, cascade & maimute la poalele Muntelui RINJANI, insula LOMBOK
ROADTRIP BY SCOOTER through INDONESIA – DAY 28 – Sights in TETEBATU: people, jungle, waterfalls & monkeys at the foot of Mount RINJANI, LOMBOK island This is a film in a series of films that present a roadtrip or excursion by scooter through Indonesia, more precisely through a few islands east of Bali. I packed a small bag, with a few clothes and every day I explored places that I had never been to before. I had a goal, but I did not set a specific route, an itinerary. I adapted on the go and was willing to make adjustments depending on my mood, fatigue or what I found on the way. The previous evening, I agreed with the guys at the homestay to take a few hours of hiking with one of them to explore the tourist attractions in the Tetebatu area, at the foot of Mount Rinjani. I set off in the morning, together with Jok, the guide during the walk, towards the first waterfall, namely the Sarang Walet Waterfall, also known as the Indiana Jones Waterfall. It is located at the end of a small, relatively narrow canyon, through which a bamboo walkway was built. Visually, the Sarang Walet Waterfall is very beautiful, but at the time of my visit, the somewhat murky water did not invite me to take a bath. I then climbed to the village of Jeruk Manis, neighboring the village of Tetebatu. Throughout the day, the guide Jok showed me and explained all kinds of things about the plants that grow in the area or about the people and customs of the place. The forests I walked through are not the dense, centuries-old jungle that I was used to in other places, but rather, clusters of trees spread over smaller or larger areas, among which were scattered houses and rice terraces. The second waterfall we visited was the Durian Indah Waterfall (or Tetebatu Waterfall – on google maps), loosely translated as “Beautiful Durian”. This waterfall was more suitable for bathing because it had a large and deep enough pool to swim in. However, it seemed to me that the sky was gradually becoming cloudy and I did not intend to walk around wet for the rest of the trip, so I did not bathe this time either. We then walked through the Tetebatu Monkey Forest, a nearby forest, in search of the famous Ebony leaf monkeys (East Jawa Langur, or “luton” in Indonesian). The variety of luton monkey found here, native to the island of Java, is black and lives in the treetops, in groups of 10-20 individuals. They are shy monkeys that rarely come down to the ground. I tried to film the monkeys with both the GoPro camera and the phone, as much as possible from the distance we could stand to watch them. The rain continued and soaked Jok from head to toe. I noticed him shivering from the cold when we took a break near a broken dam a few years ago, so we decided to end the trip and headed to our accommodation. At sunset I managed to film a few more shots of the rice terraces around the homestay and the colors of the sky, while in the background the calls to prayer from the mosques in the area could be heard. In the next video I invite you to watch the 29th day of the roadtrip, in which we descended from Tetebatu south, to Juta Lombok, on the ocean shore.
