Breeding without searching for the queen “Breeding without searching for the queen” in beekeeping is a way to form a new colony without searching for and catching the queen manually. The essence is as follows: take several frames with sealed brood, food and bees from a strong colony; transfer to a new hive/nucleus; the queen usually remains in the old hive (because more often she is on a frame with open brood or she is simply not shaken on purpose); then the new brood is given: either a queen cell, or an infertile/fertile queen, or given the opportunity to breed her own (if there are eggs/young brood). Advantages of the method: ✔ you don’t have to look for the queen for a long time; ✔ less stress for the colony; ✔ faster formation of brood. Disadvantages: ✖ there is a risk of accidentally transferring the queen if you don’t control the frames; ✖ experience in assessing brood and bee behavior is needed. If you do it yourself — after formation, check the behavior 2–4 hours later: calm, even buzzing → no queen, everything is OK for replanting; fuss, searching buzz can also indicate queenlessness; if the bees are very calm and “businesslike”, it is worth checking again whether they accidentally moved the queen.
