One of the productions that marked the cycle of literary adaptations in TV Globo's 6 PM telenovelas, Memórias de Amor aired in the first half of 1979, with general direction by Gracindo Júnior and a script by a newcomer to the genre, Wilson Aguiar Filho. The story was inspired by the novel O Ateneu, by Raul Pompeia, published in 1888. It dealt with the daily lives of the students at the Ateneu, a boys' boarding school run by Professor Aristarco (Jardel Filho), and the difficult love between his son, the republican Jorge (Eduardo Tornaghi), and the young Lívia (Sandra Bréa), whose monarchist father, Venâncio (Castro Gonzaga), was also one of the school's teachers.
