Some cats have sore mouths. You may not have noticed, but if your cat's breath smells bad, their gums are red, your cat is eating strangely, or your feline companion has a cold, it could indicate a problem with feline calicivirus. That's why it's sometimes called cat flu. Feline calicivirus can cause cats to lose their teeth, stop eating, lose weight, or even cause your cat to have dirty, unkempt fur. It happens almost without us realizing it. Many cats with feline calicivirus can be asymptomatic and transmit it to other cats. Many even recover. The most common way for a cat to become infected with feline calicivirus is through contact with other cats who have it. For example, it's common for cats to contract calicivirus by sharing a food bowl or litter box, and young kittens can also be infected from their mothers.
