Martha Lamont is a London-based artist whose practice explores spaces of uncertainty, spaces where things feel unresolved, nuanced, and complex rather than fixed or certain. Working between abstraction and figuration, she uses painting to think through moments of shift and change: how we contain ourselves, what seeps through, how the structures we rely on can both support and restrict us, and what happens when we loosen our grip on control. In this conversation, we talk about movement, gesture, transformation, and the ways her paintings hover between inner and outer worlds. Martha references healing and toxic plants, alongside organic and atmospheric forms, not as literal subjects but as metaphors for transformation. These elements are stretched, dissolved, and reconfigured into ambiguous spaces where sensation and mood take precedence over narrative. In her paintings, forms push beyond their edges and surfaces leak, reflecting how the categories we place ourselves in do not always fit the complexity of real life. Her works operate as thresholds, holding tension between control and release, clarity and fog, with a quiet luminosity that invites viewers to linger.
