Easy Art - Sculpting Simple Fish in the Garden

Here's how I make my wonky porcelain fish using the pinch pot method. After a recent move to the Dorset coast, most of my pottery tools are still 250 miles away in storage. With temperatures reaching 28°C, it was simply too hot to work indoors, so I carried my bag of porcelain and a few bits of cutlery outside into the garden instead. Inspired by the nearby sea, I spent the afternoon sculpting porcelain fish using nothing more than my fingers and a couple of kitchen knives. It's a wonderfully simple way to work—just clay, nature, birdsong, and a squirty bottle. Sometimes, the best creative sessions happen when you have to improvise. I enjoy the childlike simplicity of the fish shapes, and it's incredibly good for wellbeing to immerse yourself in an absorbing art activity. Join me in experimenting with different clays, tools, techniques, and methods of colouring. This is part one - after firing, I'll make a second video showing all the different ways to add colour - glazing, watercolour underglaze, and oxides. If you enjoy pottery, ceramics, porcelain sculpture, or slow, relaxing creative videos, why not come along along for the journey.
