Battle of Shizugatake. In April 1583 (Tensho 11), the forces of Hashiba Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie clashed near Shizugatake. This fierce battle divided the Oda forces in two, and Hideyoshi's victory set him on the path to becoming the ruler of Japan. (Military chronicles state that Shibata Katsuie repeatedly ordered Sakuma Morimasa to immediately retreat after successfully attacking Mt. Oiwayama. However, if they had broken through the second line of defense and then withdrawn, it would have been unclear what the purpose of the surprise attack was. Furthermore, retreating from the enemy's midst would have been far too dangerous. There was no point in deliberately carrying out a risky surprise attack and then deliberately risking a retreat. Simply capturing Mt. Oiwayama would have had no effect other than to surprise Hideyoshi's forces. There was no way Shibata's forces would have acted solely for that purpose. They would have seriously risked their lives just to pull off the prank. Therefore, as is commonly believed in military chronicles, Shibata Katsuie did not urge Sakuma Morimasa to retreat.
