Tisha B'Av, Shabbat "Nechamo", Parashat "Va'Etchanan" - what does all this mean to us, here and now? Sivan Rahav-Meir's weekly lesson. You are invited to join, you are invited to share. 1. We are in a very special week - on Thursday, throughout the Jewish world - the fast of Tisha B'Av. It is a day of mourning for the destruction of the First and Second Temples, and for many other troubles that have happened to us over the years. We fast for everything that is still not good in the world, in prayer and in hope for complete redemption, for a perfect world. Everyone can add their own personal prayers to this day. 2. On Tisha B'Av we do not eat or drink, sit on the ground for part of the day, read the "Lamentation" scroll, and there are many other laws and customs that express sadness. 3. And after the fast - a special Shabbat, "Shabbat Nechamo". We read the Haftarah of Nechama, and this is just the beginning. There are now seven consecutive weeks with moving and optimistic Haftarahs of Nechama, after Tisha B'Av. 4. And what is the Torah portion that is read? Parshat Va'tahanan. This is the second portion in the Book of Deuteronomy. Moses continues the moving speech in which he bids farewell to the people of Israel. 5. In this week's portion, the Ten Commandments appear again, as well as the portion "Shema Yisrael". Some commentators explain that this is the reinforcement we receive after Tisha B'Av, with this content of the portion. Shabbat Shalom, good news.
