We discover new charms of traditions passed down from ancient times. The three goddesses of Munakata Taisha Shrine are guardians of the rough seas of the Genkai Sea. The faith that has continued since ancient times is highly regarded, and in 2017, Munakata Taisha Shrine was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The "Miare Matsuri" is a Shinto ritual in which the three goddesses reunite once a year to enhance their power. The eldest goddess on Okinoshima Island and the second goddess on Oshima Island are transported to the third goddess on the Kyushu mainland by a large fleet of local fishermen's boats, their fishing flags fluttering in the wind. On a clear autumn day, October 1st, the sight of the magnificent fleet of boats carrying the goddesses, sailing majestically amidst the refreshing sea breeze and kicking up spray, is truly breathtaking. This festival is filled with gratitude from the men of the sea, who risk their lives to live, towards the goddesses.
