Aspect Ratios in Relation to Film and Sensor Sizes: Part 1 - Analogue Film
This two-part series offers a Cole’s notes style brief history of aspect ratios in relation to film and sensor sizes. Part one of this video covers analogue film, while part two will talk about digital cinema. The first video covers the invention of motion pictures up till the 1990s. I have tried to be brief and succinct. This video started with me researching which new digital camera to consider buying and I started to write down different sensor sizes and film sizes on 3x5 index cards. Then one thing led to another, and I went down a rabbit hole. I am also trying to answer many questions I have had over the years about different film processes so I sort of made this video for myself, and I hope that someone else might find it interesting or educational. Part 2 should drop in a few weeks. 00:00 Intro 01:45 Analogue Film Overview 04:40 Rise of the Academy Ratio 07:02 Cinerama 09:11 CinemaScope 13:02 VistaVision 14:50 Todd-AO 16:49 Ultra Panavision 70 17:10 SuperScope 17:58 Technirama 20:03 Imax 21:00 Super 35 References: Hart, Martin. 1995.
