A dynamometer is a device used to measure the output force of a rotating machine. A dynamometer (or force meter) is most often used to measure the horsepower of an electric motor or an automobile engine. Multiplying the angular velocity by the torsional force (moment) applied to the rotating part gives the force. The most commonly used of the force-measuring dynamometers consists of a flexible metal ring. When a force is applied to compress this ring, the ring is twisted and the force is measured according to the amount of torsion. The greater the force exerted by the object, the more the spring is stretched. The values measured in the dynamometer are denoted by the Newtonian unit (N). (1 Newton = 1/9.81 kg)
