Captain's View from the Jump Seat of Airbus A319 at Paro Airport, Bhutan!

The video opens dramatically as our Airbus A319 slices through the crisp Himalayan air, navigating south-east  of the Haa-Samtse Highway. Out the left window, the rugged Tergola Pass stands in stark, clear relief against the morning sky. We're tracking a northeasterly heading, flying direct from Point Sibsu towards the Paro Valley. Immediately after crossing Tergola Pass, the Captain takes full manual control – and won't relinquish it until touchdown. We descend into the serene Haa Valley, passing south of Haa town itself. The track takes us directly over the iconic Chelela Pass one of Bhutan's highest. Here, the Captain deftly maneuvers through fingers of scattered cloud clinging to the mountain ridges – a preview of the visual challenge ahead. Emerging from the pass, the first sight of Paro Airport is jarring: the runway lies a staggering 5,000 feet BELOW us! We're still at high valley altitude around 12,300 ft MSL, while the aerodrome sits at roughly 7,300 ft. The perspective is vertigo-inducing – the strip looks impossibly small and distant. The critical valley entry begins: We fly past the airport to the north, entering the adjacent valley system. Here comes the signature U-turn: A tight, descending 180-degree maneuver that pivots the aircraft onto final approach... from the NORTH. This unique setup is essential for Paro. Now committed: We descend directly over Paro town, rooftops clearly visible. The Captain lines up a key visual landmark: Mr. Smith's house flashes by abeam the wingtip – the crucial cue. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT DEFINES PARO: An immediate, sharp, low-altitude turn often greter 20° bank is initiated, violently swinging the aircraft into alignment with Runway 15. It's an intense, gravity-sinking maneuver mere moments from the ground. Final Seconds: Wings level... intense focus... the steep glide path. At just 50 feet after crossing the river, the Captain flares –a smooth, precise level-off. Tires kiss the short, mountain-hemmed runway. Welcome to Bhutan.
