EL PITAYERO | DOCUMENTARY

With travel bans, illnesses, and opinions tearing us apart I want this video to bring us together and travel back to a nostalgic and simpler time. To appreciate and learn about our roots, culture, and environment. To show hard work exists and that every day is a blessing. My Uncle Lucilo Medrano is a true testament to that. A man of faith who sees the good in every situation and is always thinking outside of the box. He wanted to be a photographer growing up and even took the only photos we have from my parent's wedding. He has always taken me under his wing and made my childhood unforgettable. From simply camping in our backyard to going for a Krispy Creme donut run to get me one of those goofy hats. He has always been the type of person to go on an adventure and make something out of nothing. He will hunt, sell rocks, and even make art out of cardboard. We bond over being creative and having a big heart. You can hear it in his voice and see it in his demeanor. The town loves him and is respected by all. I'm so happy to have spent this week with him and his family. I thank him for being so open and honest and sharing all of his ancestral and personal knowledge of his craft. I think he would be proud to say that this film is dedicated to his father Lucilo Medrano Sr. What kept my grandpa going before he passed away this February was the hope of improving his health so that he could go to Mexico this May in time for the pitayas.
