ON THE ART AND PRACTICE OF WRITING
A Special Holiday Present for the CRW Family: In this episode I will be sharing some tips on the art and practice of writing drawing from my long experience of publishing books, essays, and book chapters with various university presses as well as mentoring dozens of doctoral students and sitting on dissertation committees across four universities in three different countries over the past 25 years. These are the University of Cambridge, the University of Toronto, New York University, and Stanford. I share tips on the optimal conditions for writing, the ways in which to use an annotated bibliography to curate your own thought processes, and a system by which to successfully overcome writers block. Finally, I lay out what I call the “ebb-and-flow” method of writing, which includes the important elements of how to write every day, activating a skeptical interlocutor as an aid to your writing process, and also how to establish a dialogical and symbiotic relationship between your reading and your writing. Thank you and Happy Holidays!
