The Ash'aris are a group of Sunnis who do not contradict the consensus of the four Imams (Abu Hanifa, Malik, Al-Shafi'i, and Ahmad), nor do they oppose a single verse of the Quran or Hadith, or what has been authentically transmitted from the Companions and prominent scholars. They do not declare any Muslim to be an unbeliever. Their approach is considered a middle ground between those who advocate absolute reason and those who are rigidly bound by the literal meaning of the text. Although they prioritize the text over reason, they still consider reason a means of understanding the text, as indicated by many verses that urge reflection and contemplation. They were the ones who stood against the Mu'tazilites, refuting their claims, invalidating their arguments, and restoring the truth to its rightful place according to the path and methodology of the early generations of Muslims. Imam al-Ash'ari did not establish a new school of thought in Islam that contradicted the doctrines of the early generations. Rather, God guided him to the Sunni school of thought after he had adhered to the Mu'tazilite school. Through his Mu'tazilite studies, he came to understand the true nature of their doctrine and became proficient in their methods of argumentation, debate, and reasoning, which enabled him to refute them and invalidate their arguments. The Sunnis found in him the ideal they had long sought, so they followed him and adopted his approach, recognizing his ability to silence their opponents, defend their beliefs, and solidify their doctrines. The creed of Imam al-Ash'ari, which he followed, is the creed of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, al-Shafi'i, Malik, Abu Hanifa and his companions.
