At the Makgeolli Expo, the copper distillation equipment from Korea Brewing Technology was on display across from the Makgeolli School booth, so I spoke to CEO Kim Chun-kyung about the equipment. There was a time when not just anyone could make soju. In fact, there was a time when soju companies were merged. That was around 1970. Alcohol was highly profitable, so a small number of people tried to monopolize the profits. The government, arguing that alcohol was bad and therefore needed to be controlled, reduced the number of soju companies to 10 and restricted the number of licenses. Now, there are no restrictions.
