Dwarf Hairgrass Care - Carpet without CO2
Aquarium dwarf hairgrass care isn’t as easy as you might think. This plant prefers medium to high light. You also want a substrate that is designed for live plants that has a lot of nutrients in it. This plant is said to be the easiest carpeting plant in the hobby. I highly advise using a plant substrate specifically designed to grow plants. If you plan on using gravel or sand to grow hairgrass, your going to need to add some nutrient tabs inside of it. This plant prefers a lot of light. This means that the super cheap budget LED lights aren’t going to be the best option. The plant will still grow but it’s going to take a lot more time. Dwarf hairgrass will grow in a low tech planted aquarium but it’s going to take a lot more time than if you had CO2. What also might help is to do a lot of aquarium water changes to add more CO2 to the water. A lot of people don’t know this but by adding new water to the tank there is CO2 in that new water for the plants to feed on. When planting dwarf hairgrass you should tear up the clump that you purchased into smaller quarter size pieces and then plant them a couple inches apart from each other in your aquarium. By tearing the mother piece of plant apart the plant is going into defense mechanism and it’s going to grow a lot faster than just throwing the entire piece in the substrate. You can also trim the actual grass part of this plant and it will start to carpet its self from side to side. When you trim the grass blades the plants defense mechanism sends roots from side to side which then creates a carpeting effect in your fish aquarium. Using this plant in a sand substrate is it going to work the greatest. Planting this plant and gravel is not a good option for dwarf hairgrass either. There’s just very little nutrients for the roots to feed on. You’re going to have much more success using a nutrient rich substrate like a planted tank substrate.
