The citadel (1687-1809), the largest preserved fortress in the Rhineland, is a reminder of the former fortress city. In Wesel, the Lippe River flows into the Rhine after 220 km across North Rhine-Westphalia. But the #RömerLippeRadweg (Roman-Lippe Cycle Path) isn't over yet. Our #bike tour on the RLR continues to Xanten. Those who prefer can also take the alternative route from Wesel along the Rhine floodplain loop to Flüren and Bislich, and then cross the Rhine to Xanten-Beek on the Keer Tröch II passenger ferry. Bislich Island is one of the few near-natural floodplain landscapes in Germany. In Roman times, an island existed in the Rhine next to present-day Bislich. Over the centuries, the Rhine has been transformed by natural forces and human intervention. Today, flood control and nature conservation shape the character of the floodplain landscape. In Xanten, the traces of the former Roman city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana were reconstructed through years of archaeological research and presented in the Xanten Archaeological Park (APX). The park is Germany's largest open-air archaeological museum, where the only unbuilt Roman city north of the Alps has been partially reconstructed as faithful replicas, such as the amphitheater. In Roman times, battles to the death took place here. Today, open-air concerts, operas, operettas, musicals, and the Xanten Summer Festival are performed there, when permitted by COVID-19 restrictions. The large city wall with its towers and gates once encircled the entire Roman city for approximately 3.4 km. The tower with the harbor gate served as the Roman access to the Rhine port and the temple. The imposing harbor temple, with its columns and decorations, is strongly reminiscent of the famous temple on the Acropolis in Athens. There is much more to discover in the Archaeological Park. We only gave a small glimpse in the video. Next to the Roman colonia, the present-day city of Xanten developed, surrounded by a mighty city wall. Parts of the city wall were demolished over time, and the stones were sold. The striking Klever Gate survived, as it was used as a prison. It consists of two gates. The outer gate has two round towers, the so-called "Owl Towers," and the inner gate has a square tower. No matter which direction you approach Xanten from, the towers of St. Victor's Cathedral are visible from afar. Where the imposing church building now stands, there was a necropolis during Roman times. Legend has it that St. Victor, along with other Roman soldiers, was killed for his Christian faith and buried in this Roman necropolis. The name Xanten originates from the Latin "Ad Sanctos," meaning "to the saints," as the deceased were meant to rest near the saints. In 1966, a memorial and place of atonement was established in the cathedral's crypt for the people who were murdered in the Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, and Dachau concentration camps during the Nazi era. Xanten has many facets and a long history. In old manuscripts of the Nibelungenlied, Xanten is also mentioned as the birthplace of the hero Siegfried, the dragon slayer. #traveldestinations #cycling #bikepacking 🔹 If you enjoy our videos, we would be very happy to receive a "thumbs up" 👍 and your free subscription.
