Black Ops 1 Wii: The 2011 Summer That Consumed My Life

The summer of 2011 was a completely different era for gaming, and for me, it was defined by one thing: spending 10 to 12 hours a day grinding Black Ops 1 on the Nintendo Wii. In this deeply personal retrospective, I’m taking a trip down memory lane to look back at the unique culture, the missing features, and the absolute addiction of playing Call of Duty: Black Ops on the Wii. From thinking the campaign was talking directly to me because my name is Jason, to rushing home from YMCA swim sessions just to level up, that 2011 summer is permanently etched in my mind (and paired with the scent of green cucumber hand soap). We are covering what it was actually like to be a 12-year-old motion-control purist running the "Army" clan, getting compliments from adults in the lobbies, and making lifelong friends like Sam, Max, and Iowa Busta (who unironically gamed from his grandma's attic). I'm also sharing the absolute heartbreak of reaching the legendary 15th Prestige milestone, only to have a toxic hacker wipe my original profile completely clean. The Wii servers are officially gone and the player database has been deleted into the void, but despite the blurry 480p graphics and the tragic hacker wipe, I wouldn't trade this childhood journey for anything. #cod #blackops #wii
