La Mettrie was the cursed philosopher of the Enlightenment. A reader and critic of Descartes, La Mettrie defended a fascinating thesis: if Descartes distinguished between body and soul, it was primarily because he wanted to remain cautious in the face of religious power. La Mettrie thus took the risk of writing what Descartes had not dared to write.
