Mixing and Using Milk Paint

Canlin Handcrafted shows you how to mix and use your own traditional Milk Paint. ABOUT MILK PAINT Today, we think of Milk paint as it was used by farmers to paint their red-colored barns using locally and cheaply attainable ingredients such as skim milk, slaked lime, and powdered pigment. It is a very durable finish and has become very popular with the shabby chic style of refurbished antiques. Here is my recipe: Skim milk 1 part Hydrated Lime (Slaked lime, builder's lime) 4 parts Colored pigment in powdered form (any color) ** For an exterior paint, add 2 parts boiled linseed oil) Step 1: Mix slaked lime into milk until it is the consistency of coffee creamer. Stir well. Step 2: Stir in color pigment until desired shade is reached (note that it will fade 40% to 50% once dry) Step 3: Brush onto clean surface with a natural bristle brush. Wait an hour between coats, rubbing surface vigorously with clean cotton rag cloth immediately before applying new coat. Step 4 (Optional): After 48 hours, seal the painted surface with Tung Oil.
