The largest empire in all of human history. Lasting over 400 years, it came to dominate nearly half a billion people and a quarter of the world's entire territory. With a gigantic army and a relentless navy, they defeated Napoleon and won two world wars. In this video, I'm going to talk about the British Empire. The British Empire was the largest empire in the world in terms of discontinuous land area. It was composed of dominions, colonies, protectorates, mandates, and territories governed or administered by the United Kingdom. At its peak, it was the largest empire in history and, for more than a century, was the leading world power. In 1920, the British Empire dominated approximately 458 million people, a quarter of the world's population at the time, and encompassed almost 24% of the Earth's total area. As a result, its political, cultural, and linguistic legacy is gigantic. At the height of its power, it was often said that "the sun never sets on the British Empire" because its global reach ensured that the sun was always shining on at least one of its numerous territories.
