The scientific consensus was that the species was gone. Then an ornithologist named Liu Yinzeng walked into a valley in China's Qinling Mountains that wasn't on anyone's list — and looked up. Seven birds. Two adult pairs and three fledglings, in a pine tree on a hillside nobody had checked. In 1981, those seven birds were the entire global wild population of a species that had once ranged across East Asia from Russia to Japan. What happened over the next forty years is one of the most unlikely recoveries in conservation history. It involved banning pesticides overnight, convincing hundreds of farmers to abandon modern agriculture, a decade-long restoration of a Japanese island's wetlands, and a collaboration between China and Japan that nobody had planned for.
