Can the crisis of Iranian society be explained by “nihilism,” “oblivion of existence,” and the crisis of the sacred? Or do such concepts translate the completely earthly issues of power, class, state, institutional religion, and social relations into metaphysical language? In this interview, sociologist Dr. Mahmoud Sabahi criticizes the intellectual system of Dr. Bijan Abdolkarimi, a thinker whose work is influenced by Martin Heidegger and revolves around concepts such as “the end of theology,” “the sacred,” “nihilism,” “future thinking,” the relationship between tradition and modernity, and the reinterpretation of Ali Shariati. Abdolkarimi does not consider the “end of theology” to be the end of religion; rather, he speaks of the possibility of a new kind of spirituality and openness to the sacred, which, in his opinion, must transcend both theological dogma and secularism and modern nihilism. But does this project really transcend theology, or is the “sacred matter” the same theology that returns in Heideggerian language? Are concepts such as “nihilism” and “future thinking” capable of being measured and criticized? Can Heidegger be separated from Heidegger’s politics?
