Home made hay box or thermal cooker
The hay box or thermal cooker is an insulated box. It cooks food using no external energy source. Saves up to 80% energy and saves time and saves money. Good for cooking food that is in a liquid (eg, rice, beans, curries, stews, etc) Food is precooked (that is boiled) for around 10 minutes, then transfered to the hay box. The remainder of the cooking process is done in the insulated hay box using the heat trapped in the food ! Every house hold should have one ! A few examples: Pasta: instead of using gas or electricity to cook pasta for 12 minutes, I precook the pasta in boiling water for 2 minutes, then place it in they hay box for say 15 minutes. The pasta is cooked and hot using 6 times less fuel (gas, electricity or wood). For other dishes that usually take longer to cook, like a minestrone, or lentil and vegetable stew, I presoak grains for a day then bring everything to the boil for 10 minutes or so, transfer everything to the hay box and let it silently cook using the trapped heat in the food for 3 hours. So for a dish that usually takes 40 to 50 minutes to cook using a traditional fuel source, here I have only used 10 minutes of fuel ! Amazing ! It is a wonderful complement to rocket stove cooking. A great addition to any kitchen. Advantages of the Hay box: Saves energy - minimizes fuel, energy use, reducing CO2 emissions
