In my case the speedometer cable needed to be cleaned and lubricated, and straightened just a tad. Don't use thin oils like WD-40, and don't use greases that can dry up such as white lithium grease. It has a traditional speedometer cable going from the transmission to the speedometer itself, however many newer vehicles use a speed sensor and wiring to deliver that information to the instrument cluster.
