Anodized Aluminum stenciling / Logan Hicks residency
Back in 2011 I did a residency at the Neal Fay company in Santa Barbara. I took the opportunity to explore a new process of working. For this residency i explored the idea of using anodized aluminum instead of spray paint. Traditionally with stencils, you use the paper stencil to make out the surface fo the canvas, and the areas that are exposed get covered with spray paint. You can use this for one color stencils, or multiple colors. With the anodized aluminum though, you use the exposed areas where the spraypaint goes to mask out the area instead. The spray paint makes contact with the surface of the aluminum, and prohibits the dye from penetrating the aluminum surface. Once the aluminum has been anodized, you then use lacquer thinner to strip off the paint, exposing the silver colored aluminum surface. for a more detailed description of the process, watch the video, and hit subscribe for new contact
