Thomas Köner - Daikan

From Daikan (Mille Plateaux MP 107). Frozen atmospheres changing so slowly that you might not notice their steady evolution. Desolate landscapes eating you so patiently that you will have dissolved into the blizzard and thought that you always belonged here. Isolated places where the nothingness will be your only road companion until the oblivion. Thomas Köner made these things his for 25 years, through an almost flawless discography. But Daikan is special for me as I discovered Köner's work with it. Über-stretched percussive sounds and underwater-gongs recordings redefine here the concept of time-flow, simulating a repetition of the same sounds for one hour but actually personifying the idea of unnoticeable shifts of shape and frequency. Behind the obvious bleakness of the freezing place he's depicting, Köner seems to emulate the praying of Buddhist monks seeking harmony through inner explorations, counting on our patience and attention to follow the quiet but consistent remodelling of the harsh soundscapes welcoming us. A tale of minimalism, loneliness and coldness, but a fable of patience, dedication and focus to reach new mind places. Dangerously mesmerizing.
