"Pamukkale is famous for the limestone deposits formed on the slope of Mount Cökelez. The water flowing from the hot springs, rich in calcium compounds and carbon dioxide, cools on the surface and precipitates calcium carbonate, the deposits of which form numerous dripstones. Taking advantage of the uneven terrain, thresholds are formed on the mountainside, semicircular and elliptical pools of thermal water shaped like terraces, separated by circular dams over which the water flows. This process has been ongoing for approximately 14,000 years. These formations in times of Roman ruins were called travertines. The Turkish authorities protected the area, creating a national park there, which UNESCO has granted patronage, adding it to its World Heritage List. The national park was established to protect the travertines. Hotels built on the upper slopes contributed to the gradual drying up of the thermal springs and the ongoing environmental degradation. Consequently, the Turkish authorities ordered the hotels to be closed and subsequently demolished. Their remains can now be seen. In 1997, the route leading through the natural terraces was closed. The southern section is open to tourists, along a narrow man-made channel through which the thermal water flows, filling the artificial pools. To protect the sediment, entry onto the travertines is only possible after removing footwear. The calcium content of the flowing water is so high that it can cover an area of approximately 4.9 km² with 1 mm of sediment annually. The concrete dams that form the artificial pools are now completely covered with this sediment. (the amount and location of flow) is regulated by park staff so as to evenly supply natural and artificial pools."
